Southern Wesleyan University Director of Athletics Chris Williams is pleased to announce the hiring of a new coach. Doug Wilkinson, who is currently the 1st Assistant Golf Professional at The Golf Club of South Carolina at Crickentree in Blythewood, S.C., has accepted the position of head coach for the SWU Men's Golf team.

Wilkinson has experience as a head coach at the collegiate level, leading the women's golf program at Newberry College during the 2004-05 school year. After winning two tournaments during the season, the team finished second in the conference tournament which was the highest finish in the program's history. Wilkinson coached the conference Freshman of the Year, as well as players who were named either first or second team all-conference.

Wilkinson also served as an assistant coach at Ridgeview High School in Blythewood. His two main roles were helping to organize practices and assisting the players' with their swings and course management.

In his role as 1st Assistant Golf Professional, Wilkinson was assigned numerous responsibilities which included coordinating tournaments, providing golf instruction to both groups and individuals, and administering the club's USGA handicap system.

"I think Doug's wide range of experience as a collegiate player, assistant coach, head coach, and assistant golf professional will help make the transition to SWU smoother for both Doug and members of the golf team," said Williams. "It's going to be great to have Doug on campus full time as he will be working in SWU's Adult and Graduate Studies department."

Wilkinson and the SWU golf team will begin their fall campaign at the Bill Sergent University of the Cumberlands Tournament in Williamsburg, Ky. The tournament will be played on September 8-9.
